Emotional Responses to Grief

If you are currently coping with bereavement you will be experiencing many different strong emotions. The nature and combination of your emotions will be very personal and unique to you; no two people ever grieve in exactly the same way. Bereavement is as unique as you and your life; it is as unique as your loss and the feelings shared between loved ones.

However, there is a long list of emotional responses to grief and loss which may be experienced in any combination and with varying intensity. Among many other reactions, these can include:

  • Shock, emotional numbness, and feelings of being on ‘autopilot’.
  • Disbelief, confusion, and even hallucinations.
  • Longing for the deceased including obsessive thoughts and sleeplessness.
  • Anger about shattered plans for the future and worsened predicaments.
  • Anger surrounding circumstances of the cause of the death.
  • Guilt about how you feel or what you think should have been said or done.
  • Torment over inability to resolve ‘unfinished business’.
  • Depression and low feelings of life hardly seeming worth living any longer.
  • Physical pain including tightness in the chest and breathlessness or aching limbs.
  • Lack of appetite, lethargy and a general lack of energy.
  • Spiritual issues including anger towards God or feelings of unfairness.
  • Feelings of hopelessness and oblivion.
  • Feelings of loneliness or abandonment.
  • Feeling a loss of ‘wholeness’ of one’s self, as if a part of you has died.
  • Worries about what the future holds.
  • Concerns about how to handle other people’s grief, including bereaved children.
  • Concerns about how to handle well-meaning but potentially overly-sympathetic and overbearing friends, relatives or work colleagues.
  • Concerns about how to handle your hurt feelings caused by those with a lack of sympathy for your situation.

There is no such thing as a ‘normal’ way to respond to the death of a loved one because we are all different and have to find our own personal ways to grieve and to cope, and so you may experience any of the above in any combination and in any number of levels of strengths of feeling. And so it really does help to talk and air your feelings and concerns to an independent professional who will hear your worries and concerns in a very sympathetic, empathetic and non-judgemental manner.

Hypnotherapy Offers Extra Care in Bereavement Counselling

Most bereavement counsellors are very good at this kind of work and you can gain great benefits from engaging their services. However, I have more tools at my disposal with which to help you than most Bereavement Counsellors owing to the fact that I am also a trained and qualified clinical hypnotherapist. In actual fact, my first exposure to clinical hypnotherapy involved bereavement of a loved one. It happened back in 1985 when, as a 23 year-old, my 14 year-old sister died very suddenly and unexpectedly. To this day, I am so thankful for the gentle but powerful help that I received from my hypnotherapist who helped me shore up my emotional strength to help me cope with what was a massive shock and terrible loss in my life. It is now my privilege to be able to offer such comfort and strength-building to others in grief. If you wish, you may read more detail about this aspect of my personal story in the ‘About Us’ section of this website. You may gain some extra insight from this.

How Can Clinical Hypnotherapy Help in the Bereavement Process?

At the core of most hypnotherapy sessions are such things as: deep relaxation; stress management; self-esteem building; ego strengthening; confidence building; positive mental healing and positive mental programming, which can all have a direct effect on your physiology and immune system, as well as your mental state.

Bereavement, whether of your parent, spouse, child or friend, can totally shake your sense of security (and bring home to you that you are not immortal). Bereavement can also cause severe feelings of depression and anxiety, and once you get overwhelmed by those feelings it can seem impossible to surface and begin living your own life. This is not an easy subject to deal with; there are several stages of grieving that need to be lived through in order to achieve the ultimate one, which is acceptance.

I can help mentally strengthen you to cope with these stages of grieving, and potentially even help you to make the process of reaching the stage of acceptance take place over a less prolonged period. I can achieve such things not just by listening and talking things through, as most bereavement counsellors do, but also by engaging the immense power of your sub-conscious mind in a very calm and gentle but effective manner. Your subconscious mind is the massive part of your brain that contains all your knowledge, memories and dreams. It is also the place where your daily thoughts and emotions are processed while safeguarding your healthy bodily functioning and immune response. Clinical hypnotherapy enables me to bypass the critical faculty of your conscious mind (which will likely be trying to deal with a lot of negative and emotionally painful thoughts right now) and feed your subconscious mind directly with all kinds of positive messages full of emotional healing and mental strengthening. This will shore up your emotional defences and help you cope through the times ahead with a sense of growing hope, optimism and independence.

Audio CD Support

All hypnotherapy sessions are recorded and edited down on to an audio CD, which will be provided to enable you to continue strengthening your mind and emotions as often as you want in your own time. First thing in the morning and last thing at night can be good times to listen to such bespoke hypnotherapy recordings. Such listening takes advantage of the positive mental self-programming that you can bring about through the power of spaced repetition. The more times you listen to the positive suggestions, the more they will eventually become hard-wired into your brain for your long-term benefit.
